As public relations manager at The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Carol Godwin coordinated media outreach, public relations and hospitality support for The TIME/ABC NEWS Summit on Obesity presented by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, June 2-4, 2004.
Working closely with TIME Magazine and ABC News staff, Godwin organized and managed components including media attendance, participant fitness activities, lodging and food and beverage support. Four of the five Colonial Williamsburg on-site hotels provided accommodations for speakers and attendees. Dining, fitness activities and broadcast locations were set at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Courses, in the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area and at the Williamsburg Lodge and Conference Center, which housed the media room. ABC World News Tonight anchor Peter Jennings broadcast live on location in the Colonial Governor’s Palace Garden.
Jennings served as moderator for multiple panels throughout the Obesity Summit. Notable among the summit’s 91 guest speakers and panelists were U.S. Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona, doctors Arthur Agatston, T. Berry Brazelton, Timothy Johnson, David L. Katz, Dean Ornish, Mehmet C. Oz, Barry Sears, Joshua D. Sparrow, and Magee-Womens Hospital surgeon and Director of Bariatric Surgery at the UPMC, Philip Schauer. Also speaking were Andrew Weil, M.D., Tommy G. Thompson, Secretary of Health and Human Services, national education, broadcast, food, nutrition and pharmaceutical industry representatives, research teams and White House spokespersons.
Media attendance included national and regional health and business reporters. Coverage was prevalent in local, regional and national news and lifestyle print, broadcast and electronic outlets.
Prior to his premature death, ABC News anchor Peter Jennings continued his follow up reporting about key health and obesity issues discussed during the summit.
The Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area and its many hospitality offerings garnered broad national exposure and realized increased business and leisure bookings in the months immediately following the Summit on Obesity.
